February in St Ives

The dreaded ‘blue’ Monday is out of the way and, if we’re honest, we’re a little relieved that February is peeking its nose around the corner. If January is all about resolutions then February is about allowing ourselves to relax a little – we’ve been keeping up with the gym routine and it’s time to treat ourselves for being so saintly all month.

With all that in mind we reckon that February is the perfect time to arrange a trip away to the coast. If you’re planning on letting your hair down in St Ives, here’s what you can expect to get up to.

St Ives Feast

An ancient tradition, the St Ives Feast celebrates the anniversary of the consecration of the Parish Church at St Eia in 1434. The feast day itself falls on 6th February and begins with the mayor’s civic procession, followed by the hurling of the silver ball – a centuries-old form of rugby. This in itself is a sight to behold and whoever returns the silver ball to the mayor on the stroke of midday will receive a prized silver coin. More events will be announced closer to the time, but this is certainly not to be missed if you’re planning an early February visit.

If you’re happy to roll up your sleeves then volunteer your time and muscle power to the Working Party at Steeple Woodlands Nature Reserve on 15th February. You’ll be helping to plant trees, maintain footpaths and generally ensure that habitats are well managed. If you like the idea of giving something back to your holiday spot and can spare two hours then contact Giles on 01736798908.

The Surf Cinema Season is in full swing come February, with Lost Atlas and Castles in the Sky both showing at SurfHouse. Tickets are cheap and include a free slice of pizza – a great way to spend a Friday night if you ask us. Or, if you’re into galleries, head to the St Ives Art Club to see the Alison Dupernex and Sharon McSwiney exhibition for free. The pieces come under the banner of ‘Colours of the Seasons’ and feature textiles, jewellery and metalwork. The exhibition is taking place from 11–17th February.

Tempted? If our events aren’t quite enough to persuade you, then we’re sure that one of the fabulous offers at St Ives Harbour Hotel will cement your decision. Visit us from 19th February until 23rd March and take advantage of our midweek offer for an affordable stay and delicious meal in The Terrace restaurant. To find out more, get in touch.
