What’s On: Upcoming Art Events

There are few things in life that bring us more joy than knowing that we’re about to enter a season filled with all things art. Fortunately, for those of us lucky enough to live in St Ives, each season brings with it a fresh selection of cultural things to experience – we just find it particularly pleasing when we can enjoy a Cornish ice cream in the summer’s sun after we’ve browsed the latest gallery.

The summer of 2016 looks set to bring with it a great new selection of exhibitions to enjoy and other arts-related events to attend. Here are our top picks for the weeks ahead.

Belgrave Gallery
Located at 22 Fore Street in St Ives, Belgrave Gallery is the place to go to see some of the finest British artwork that there is. From 28th May until 20th June, you can see the work of Jessica Cooper. In an exhibit entitled ‘One Divided by Two’, Cooper’s 34 paintings show the artist considering her native Cornish roots in contrast to the recent time she has spent in Los Angeles.

Cheap seats community cinema
One to go under the header of ‘arts’ rather than ‘art’, but certainly worth shouting about all the same: St Ives Art Club launched their cheap seats cinema venture this year, and 4th June will see El Club being shown, with tickets costing just £4 for non-members. The cinema is a great way to catch independent films that you might have otherwise missed and is much more affordable than the big-name screens.

Introducing Art Space
Introducing Art Space is a fantastic way to discover new and upcoming artists. The gallery is a cooperative, which currently showcases the work of seven artists. From Julian Rowe’s oil paintings to Helen Atkins’ acrylic depictions of the ocean blue, you might just find a new favourite piece in this beachside shop.
